Niemeyer Factory in Groningen to Become Digital Innovation Hub

The former Niemeyer tobacco factory in Groningen is being redeveloped into a hub for digital innovation, focusing on artificial intelligence, data science, and digital technology. Economic Affairs Minister Dirk Beljaarts and State Secretary for Groningen Recovery Eddie van Marum visited the site in May to highlight its importance for the Northern Netherlands.

The redevelopment project, undertaken by Campus Groningen in collaboration with property developer MWPO, aims to create a regional center for startups, scale-ups, and public initiatives in the digital sector. MWPO acquired the Niemeyer site in 2024 with the goal of transforming it into a key player in the digital economy.

Beljaarts emphasized the importance of public and private investment in digital technologies for a strong digital economy, enhanced cybersecurity, and reduced reliance on non-European countries. He cited the digital collaboration in Groningen as a positive example of how these goals can be achieved.

The Niemeyer site’s transformation is part of the Economic Agenda Nij Begun, which seeks to promote knowledge transfer and talent development through specialized campuses. This initiative aligns with broader regional objectives to stimulate digitalization and AI as drivers of economic growth.

During the visit, companies such as Bollegraaf, Stekz, and Enatom showcased AI-driven applications in areas ranging from circular waste management to healthcare solutions. The University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG) also presented its work on AI in health, highlighting partnerships with tech startups and the utilization of health data.

Campus Groningen currently hosts over 500 IT and tech companies and aspires to become a national leader in the digital space. The Niemeyer site is one of eight locations designated under the national Masterplan Campussen for innovation-driven development.
