NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has personally invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to attend the summit in The Hague at the end of June. Sources within NATO confirmed the invitation to news agency ANP.
While Zelensky previously mentioned receiving an invitation, he did not specify if it was addressed to him personally. The presence of the Ukrainian president at the summit is uncertain due to objections from the United States.
European allies of Kyiv are reportedly in favor of Zelensky’s attendance. It remains unclear which parts of the summit Zelensky would be permitted to participate in.
Diplomats suggest Zelensky will likely be invited to the dinner with King Willem-Alexander, which will host Trump and other leaders of NATO member states on Tuesday evening, June 24. However, Zelensky is not expected to participate in the primary leaders’ meeting the following day.
Zelensky may be given the opportunity to speak during a meeting of NATO foreign ministers or attend a meeting of the ‘coalition of the willing’. This coalition is composed of mainly European NATO countries discussing their own peace agreement plan for Ukraine.
A large delegation from the Ukrainian government is expected to accompany Zelensky to The Hague. This delegation may include the first deputy prime minister and the ministers of Defense and Foreign Affairs.
While NATO has not confirmed Rutte’s personal invitation, it acknowledges that “Ukraine” has received an invitation to the summit.
