NATO Allies Discuss New Defense Spending Target at The Hague Summit

NATO allies are considering a new defense spending target of 5% of GDP, comprising 3.5% for defense and 1.5% for defense-related spending, as a key topic for the upcoming summit in The Hague. This ambitious goal was discussed by NATO ministers in Brussels on Thursday.

While most NATO members agree on the necessity of increased investment, a consensus on the timeline for achieving this target is still under debate. Some, including the Baltic states and Sweden, are advocating for a 2030 deadline, while others prefer a more gradual approach, aiming for 2035.

Discussions also continue regarding the specific definitions of “defense-related spending” and whether military aid to Ukraine can be included within this category. However, officials have stated aid to Ukraine will not be negatively impacted by any potential agreement.

The summit in The Hague will focus on three core issues: increased defense spending with a fairer burden-sharing arrangement between the United States and Europe, the need to boost production capacity within the defense industry, and the ongoing support for Ukraine.

To ensure progress, a plan is being developed where countries commit to specific annual increases in their defense budgets. Officials acknowledge that while the proposed spending levels represent a substantial investment, they are achievable given the economic strength of member states.
