A nationwide train strike will paralyze NS train services across the Netherlands on Friday, June 6, due to industrial action by rail workers in the central region.
The strike, centered in Utrecht province, is expected to cause widespread disruption as a significant portion of NS operations and the national rail network’s coordination are based there.
While trains will continue to operate between Amsterdam Central and Schiphol Airport, most other NS services will be suspended.
International trains will run as scheduled, with the exception of the Eurocity Direct service.
The strike action comes after negotiations between NS and railway unions broke down over demands for an improved pay deal.
Unions rejected NS’s offer of a 2.55% annual pay rise, arguing that it is insufficient to offset inflation. They are advocating for a larger increase and improved working conditions for employees working irregular hours.
Further strike action is planned for later in June, with the western region targeted on June 10 and the northwest and east on June 12, potentially leading to further nationwide disruptions.
Regional services operated by Arriva and other companies will not be affected by the strike.
