Motion Regarding Wilders’ Asylum Plans Fails Due to Lack of Support

Geert Wilders’ ten-point asylum plan is unlikely to be implemented following the collapse of the Dutch coalition government. A motion to further elaborate on the plan, proposed by Thierry Baudet, is expected to fail due to Wilders’ own opposition.

Wilders stated that he opposes further elaboration of the plan, preferring its immediate implementation. He believes that further discussion would only delay the process and ultimately lead to the plan being deemed unfeasible.

The motion’s failure highlights the deep divisions within Dutch politics regarding asylum policy. While other parties initially expressed openness to Wilders’ proposals, they are now hesitant to fully support them. This reluctance stems from legal and practical concerns, as well as a desire to avoid being perceived as unwilling to cooperate on stricter asylum measures.

Wilders, fueled by the collapse of the government, aims to make asylum and migration the central theme of the upcoming campaign. He intends to include his ten-point plan in the PVV election program and actively promote it to voters.

Other party leaders face the challenge of shifting the focus of the national conversation away from asylum. They recognize the risk of being overshadowed by Wilders on this issue and must find alternative topics to engage voters.
