The Netherlands secured a commanding 8-0 victory against Malta on Tuesday, with Memphis Depay scoring twice and equaling Robin van Persie as the country’s joint top goalscorer.
Depay’s two goals brought his international total to 50, matching van Persie’s record. He first converted a penalty in the eighth minute and then followed up with a powerful strike from a Denzel Dumfries cross seven minutes later.
The victory marked Malta’s heaviest defeat since 1990.
The Dutch team displayed dominance throughout the match, with Virgil van Dijk and Micky van de Ven also finding the net.
Depay contributed an assist for Xavi Simons’ goal in the 61st minute with a precise pass. Shortly after, he was replaced by Donyell Malen, who also scored two goals and set up another for Noa Lang.
Following this win, the Netherlands now has two victories in their World Cup qualifying group, including a 2-0 win against Finland where Depay also scored the opening goal.
