Maastricht Prepares for the Heiligdomsvaart Celebration

Maastricht is hosting the Heiligdomsvaart, a major Christian festival celebrated every seven years, featuring religious, cultural, and festive activities. The event, rooted in the Middle Ages, began with processions to the Sint-Servaasbasiliek.

The Heiligdomsvaart, a ten-day program, includes over two hundred activities. The highlight of the event are the processions on two Sundays, during which relics are carried through the city for veneration.

The Noodkist, a 12th-century chest containing remains of Saint Servatius and other bishops, is the central relic. The chest was historically carried through the city in times of need, most recently in 1991 during the Gulf War.

Mayor Wim Hillenaar anticipates around 150,000 attendees for the Heiligdomsvaart. While the event is not expected to significantly boost the local economy, it aims to showcase Maastricht’s identity and heritage.

The event’s program includes diverse activities such as concerts and a motorcycle blessing. Organizers are mindful of maintaining the religious significance of the Heiligdomsvaart, ensuring it doesn’t become merely a funfair.
