Left-Wing Party Members Approve Stricter Israel Policy Sparking Internal Division

A joint congress of the GroenLinks (GreenLeft) and PvdA (Labour Party) witnessed strong emotions and internal division as members overwhelmingly approved a proposal to halt arms supply to Israel. The decision, even for defensive purposes, triggered tears, resignations, and warnings about potential electoral risks.

The motion, spearheaded by MP Kati Piri, received over 83 percent approval, reflecting a desire for a stricter stance on Israel. However, the move ignited passionate debate, with opponents facing jeers and prompting calls for restraint from moderator Ineke van Gent.

Former alderman Reshma Roopram resigned in protest, and attempts to voice concerns about Israeli citizens’ security were met with hostility. Despite the dissent, many younger members expressed optimism, believing the policy would resonate with voters who feel their voices are now being heard, potentially leading to electoral gains.

Party leader Frans Timmermans defended the decision, stating it aligns with the sentiment of a large portion of the Dutch population and aims to pressure Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu into negotiations. While acknowledging the pain caused, particularly within the Jewish community, he emphasized the importance of internal dialogue and unity.

Timmermans dismissed concerns about alienating potential coalition partners like the VVD, asserting that prioritizing peace and compassion is paramount. He cautioned against those attempting to undermine the party’s commitment to ending the war and advocating for peace.
