The investigation into allegations against former Speaker of the House Khadija Arib has revealed a potential settling of scores within parliamentary circles, prompting calls for further investigation by the House itself. The case, which initially appeared to fit a pattern of workplace abuse, has taken a new turn with the emergence of evidence suggesting strategic maneuvering and erased tracks.
The initial complaints against Arib in September 2022 included accusations of a “reign of terror,” intimidating behavior, and abuse of power. The Presidium of the House launched an investigation, and Arib’s subsequent resignation seemed to confirm the allegations for many.
However, further investigation has revealed a more complex picture. While Arib was known for addressing people “directly and in some cases with raised voices,” the most serious accusations have not been substantiated. The external investigation found that many staff members still admired Arib as a competent and involved chair.
Hearings by the National Criminal Investigation Department have shed light on the circumstances surrounding the initial complaints. Evidence suggests that at least one senior official involved in ordering the investigation into Arib was also among the anonymous complainants. There was also a strategic consultation about leaking the news to win the ‘communication battle’ against Arib.
The criminal file indicates that highly placed individuals may have known more than they admitted, and that tracks have been erased. The Public Prosecution Service is unable to proceed independently due to the involvement of politicians, placing the responsibility back on the House to decide whether to conduct further investigations.
