CDA leader Henri Bontenbal openly discusses his aversion to photoshoots, preferring to avoid outward embellishments and focus on substantive issues. In a wide-ranging interview, Bontenbal delves into his political views, personal values, and the challenges facing the Netherlands.
Bontenbal acknowledges the difficulty of maintaining integrity in politics. His wife, Hanneke, a former midwife, provides him with a “reality check” by sharing her experiences with ordinary people struggling with various challenges. This helps him stay grounded and connected to the everyday realities of Dutch citizens.
Discussing the current political landscape, Bontenbal expresses skepticism about the possibility of a coalition with the PVV, emphasizing the importance of responsible governance over populist tactics. He notes that going to sea with populist parties comes at a price, highlighting that such parties are not concerned with making the Netherlands better, but with making their party as big as possible. He also reflects on the recent fall of the cabinet, viewing it as the culmination of two years of complete chaos.
He shares his concerns about climate change, a topic that has motivated him to make personal lifestyle changes, such as refraining from flying since 2006. Regarding international issues, Bontenbal addresses the war in Gaza, stating that the shooting of Palestinian aid workers prompted him to voice a more critical stance on Israel’s actions. However, he emphasizes the complexity of the conflict and the need to consider all perspectives.
Bontenbal also touches on his religious background and his ongoing quest for faith, admitting that he longs to experience God more deeply. He reflects on his upbringing in a Rotterdam reformed family, characterized by modest means and a strong emphasis on community.
Finally, he addresses the integration crisis and his belief that people with a migration background must behave, integrate, and want to belong. At the same time, the community must make an effort to bring people in and keep them there.
