GroenLinks-PvdA Congress Approves Proposal to Halt Arms Deliveries to Israel Amidst Internal Discord

A proposal to cease arms deliveries to Israel, even for defense against rocket attacks, was approved by over 83% of GroenLinks-PvdA members at their joint congress, triggering emotional reactions and internal discord. The decision highlights a significant shift towards a stricter Israel policy within the left-wing merged party.

The atmosphere at the congress was tense, with some members expressing strong opposition to the proposal. Former alderman Reshma Roopram was reportedly booed while trying to voice her concerns and subsequently resigned from the party. Similarly, another individual was met with jeers when attempting to explain the potential impact of a complete arms embargo on the security of Israeli citizens. Moderator Ineke van Gent had to repeatedly urge attendees to maintain order and ensure everyone felt safe.

Despite the internal conflict, many members, particularly young people, celebrated the decision as a victory and expressed optimism about its potential to attract new voters. Nassreddin Taibi, for example, believes the motion has resonated with individuals who feel their voices are now being heard and could lead to significant electoral gains for GroenLinks-PvdA.

Party leader Frans Timmermans acknowledged the pain and sorrow the decision has caused, especially within the Jewish community in the Netherlands, while affirming his support for the parliamentary group’s call to temporarily halt arms supplies to Israel. He stressed the importance of internal dialogue and urged party members to remain united despite differing opinions.

Timmermans dismissed concerns about the potential impact of the stricter Israel policy on future coalition possibilities, stating that the party’s position reflects the sentiments of a large segment of the Dutch population and should not be compromised for political expediency. He also cautioned against attempts to undermine the party’s commitment to peace and compassion.
