GreenLeft and Labour Party to Decide on Future Cooperation and Potential Merger

GroenLinks (GreenLeft) and PvdA (Labour Party) members will vote in an online referendum from Thursday until June 12th to decide whether to continue their cooperation in the current form. The vote will also determine whether to proceed with the dissolution of both parties to establish a new left-wing party.

This decision was announced by both party boards on Thursday. The members’ decision will be known before the congress on June 21st, which was initially scheduled to decide on the merger.

Despite campaigning with a joint candidate list and election program, the parties will remain separate entities. Following the elections, expected to take place at the end of October, the elected candidates will operate as a single faction in the Tweede Kamer (House of Representatives), subject to member approval via the online referendum.

The founding congress, originally planned for after the municipal elections of March 2026, will still take place. At the congress, members will determine the organizational and ideological structure of the new party. The original timeline was designed to avoid disrupting local factions still working towards joint lists. The fall of the cabinet has not changed the timeline for this founding congress.
