Train services in the eastern and northwestern regions of the Netherlands will be disrupted on Tuesday due to a strike by railway workers. The unions, VVMC and FNV Spoor, announced the strike after deeming the latest wage offer from NS (Dutch Railways) management insufficient.
The strike will be the fourth in a series of actions taken by unions to press for higher wages and improved working conditions as they have been in disagreement with the NS management for months over the collective labor agreement.
The affected areas include major cities and transportation hubs such as Amsterdam, Arnhem, Nijmegen and Schiphol Airport, among others. Passengers are advised to expect significant disruptions to train services in these regions.
The NS has yet to release a full statement on the anticipated impact of the strike, but based on previous strikes, it is expected that no trains will operate in the affected areas.
The smaller union CNV considered the wage offer a reason to negotiate further, while the larger unions were not enthusiastic, announcing a new strike for Tuesday but also engaging in discussions with the NS on Monday. The consultation lasted 2.5 hours, after which unions deliberated and ultimately decided to proceed with the strike.
The unions are primarily seeking compensation for inflation to protect their members’ purchasing power. While the NS management views the current offer as a starting point for further negotiations, the unions maintain that it falls short of their demands.
