Former Radio Presenter Peter de Bie Chooses Euthanasia After Wife’s Death and Declining Health

Peter de Bie, a former radio presenter, has decided to undergo euthanasia on his 75th birthday, following a period of declining health and the recent death of his wife, Dieuwertje Blok. De Bie, who worked in radio for over 45 years, including 28 at the Nieuwsshow, shared his decision from his wheelchair at his home.

De Bie cited multiple health issues as the primary reason for his decision. He has experienced heart failure, undergone numerous angioplasties, and had a leg amputated. Doctors have informed him that they can no longer provide effective treatment, and his body is “literally falling apart.” Rehabilitation efforts with a prosthesis proved unsuccessful due to his weakened heart.

The death of his wife, Dieuwertje Blok, in March, also played a significant role in his decision. De Bie explained that Blok had been his caregiver and a source of joy. Her absence has made him reconsider his future, as he is unwilling to rely on external caregivers or move to a nursing home.

Despite his physical struggles, De Bie maintained a positive outlook for a long time, motivated by his love for his wife. He emphasized that every day spent with Blok was a joy, and he remained deeply in love with her until her death. However, with her gone, the prospect of continued physical decline has led him to conclude that “the time has come” to end his life.

Blok’s battle with cancer and her optimistic approach to her illness also influenced De Bie. Even after undergoing a nose amputation and subsequent treatments, she maintained a positive attitude, viewing it as an “adventure.” Her strength and resilience in the face of adversity inspired De Bie.

De Bie expressed gratitude for the support of his children and friends, but ultimately feels that euthanasia is the right choice for him. He has found peace with his decision and is determined to face his death with the same cheerful spirit that his wife embraced throughout her life. He is confident that she would approve of his decision and is comforted by the thought of being reunited with her.
