Amber Beijer, a 23-year-old CDA councillor in De Ronde Venen, has publicly addressed the pervasive sexism she experiences in politics. This includes both offline interactions with colleagues and online harassment from citizens.
Beijer, who has been active in politics since the age of 19, created a video about her experiences and posted it on social media, prompting a wave of reactions ranging from support and recognition to cynicism. She aims to challenge the notion that female politicians are solely present for their image and to dismantle the acceptance of sexist remarks as mere lack of tact.
A specific incident involving a colleague’s comment about her appearance prompted Beijer to speak out. The councillor suggested she would be better suited on a campaign poster in a bikini than with a professional portrait. She expressed frustration that reporting such incidents is often discouraged, with the expectation that the recipient should simply accept the behavior.
Beijer notes that younger women in politics are often perceived as oversensitive or hysterical when addressing such issues. She believes that addressing sexism is more effective when colleagues of the same gender and age confront each other about inappropriate behavior. She also highlights the disparity in how the voices of young women and older men are heard, with the latter often taken more seriously.
While acknowledging the role of experience and knowledge, Beijer believes sexism contributes to the unequal treatment. She cites instances where councillors from other groups contact her male colleagues about matters within her portfolio, despite her being responsible for them. She believes that individuals in politics display inclination towards men than towards women.
These sexist comments come predominantly from men, but also from women, Beijer explains. The comments from women often take the form of well-intentioned but peculiar advice based on their own experiences. For example, she was advised to avoid focusing on her appearance at council meetings, because that would reinforce existing stereotypes.
Beijer also addressed the presence of personal photos on her Instagram account, including those from vacations. While she removed a bikini photo that was referenced by her colleague, she questioned the need to drastically alter her social media presence simply because she is a young politician. She argues that young women should not have to alter their lifestyle to fit traditional standards.
