Dutch Competition Authority Approves Schiphol Airport’s New Fee Package

The Dutch competition watchdog, ACM, has approved Schiphol Airport’s new fee package for airlines, deeming them “not unreasonable.” This decision follows complaints from airlines and lobby groups regarding the proposed fee increases.

The ACM’s ruling permits Schiphol to implement a fee structure that incentivizes the use of quieter aircraft by offering lower fees, while simultaneously increasing charges for noisier planes during take-off and landing. This measure aims to encourage airlines to operate more sustainably and reduce noise pollution.

Schiphol had previously announced its intention to raise fees by an average of 37% over three years, citing the impact of high inflation and interest rates. The airport maintains that it operates on a non-profit basis concerning airport charges, using the revenue to maintain airport operations and enhance service quality. A portion of the fee increase is allocated to offset losses incurred during the coronavirus pandemic.

The airport has outlined plans to invest €6 million over the next five years to improve passenger services, upgrade infrastructure, and improve working conditions for staff.

Several airlines and lobby groups, including airline industry association Barin, filed complaints with the ACM, expressing concerns that the fee hikes would lead to higher ticket prices for passengers. KLM CEO Marjan Rintel stated last year that raising prices would weaken Schiphol’s position as an international hub.
