Does Reading Really Offer More Than Other Media

Reading may not be as superior to other forms of media like videos and audiobooks as previously thought, according to recent research. While reading is often touted for its cognitive and relaxation benefits, studies suggest that the comprehension process is largely similar across different media.

Educational psychologist Brechtje van Zeijts from Utrecht University found that reading and watching videos evoke comparable brain processes. In a controlled experiment, primary school students who read a story on paper and those who watched the same story on video showed no significant differences in comprehension. This suggests that understanding a text, regardless of the medium, involves forming a coherent mental representation of the story.

The content of the material plays a crucial role in determining its value. While a good book may offer more than mindless internet videos, a high-quality documentary or series can be just as beneficial as a well-written novel. Even seemingly simple content requires some cognitive effort to understand.

Reading remains a valuable skill, particularly for accessing information in written form. However, videos and audiobooks may not necessarily be worse alternatives for broader cognitive development. The decreasing reading time and proficiency among young people may not be as alarming as previously believed.

Reading’s reputation as a stress-reliever is also being questioned. While printed pages may be less stimulating than screens, the intensity of streaming, scrolling, or gaming can offer mental distance from stressors. Professor Daantje Derks from Erasmus University Rotterdam explains that psychological detachment from work and other stressors is crucial for recharging, and activities like TikTok can achieve this by completely absorbing attention.

Ultimately, the best activity for relaxation and cognitive development depends on individual preferences and needs. What works for one person may not work for another. The key is to find activities that provide the right combination of stimulation and distraction in a busy life.
