Code Orange Warning Issued for Persistent Heat in the Netherlands

The KNMI (Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute) has issued a code orange warning for the Netherlands, citing nuisance due to persistent heat in homes and offices. This signifies that individuals may experience symptoms like dehydration and overheating.

Elderly individuals and those with pre-existing health vulnerabilities are particularly at risk. The KNMI advises against strenuous physical activity between 12:00 and 18:00 on Tuesday. A code yellow alert is in effect for the remainder of the Netherlands for Tuesday.

The expected heatwave is attributed to a high-pressure area over Northern Europe, drawing hot air from Spain and Southern France, creating a “heat dome” effect. This phenomenon traps warm air, preventing it from rising and further intensifying the heat.

While heat domes have always existed, their recognition has grown recently, with increased media attention since 2021.

The heat dome is expected to shift eastward from Wednesday. A large high-pressure area off the coast of Portugal will influence the weather, pushing cooler, humid sea air from the north towards Western Europe, including the Netherlands.

There is a significant possibility of recording the warmest July 1st ever. The average temperature in De Bilt is predicted to be 25.8 degrees Celsius, with a maximum of 35 degrees Celsius.

The chance of setting a record in De Bilt on Wednesday is lower. However, there is a slightly greater chance of a local temperature record in the southern part of the country. Typical temperatures for the beginning of July are around 18 degrees Celsius.
