Amsterdam Has the Highest Tourist Tax in Europe

Amsterdam levies the highest tourist tax in Europe, according to research from booking platform Holidu. The study analyzed tourist taxes for a three-star hotel in one hundred popular holiday destinations.

Tourists in Amsterdam can now expect to pay around 100 euros per person in tax for a week’s stay. This is due to a combination of a high tax percentage and increased hotel room prices. The tourist tax in Amsterdam has gradually increased over the years, rising from 5.5 percent ten years ago to 12.5 percent last year.

Several Greek cities also have high tourist taxes compared to other European destinations.

Catalonia, Spain, will introduce higher tourist taxes in October, effectively doubling the cost for holidaymakers in destinations like Barcelona. The revenue generated will be used to fund housing for local residents.

Compared to Amsterdam, popular destinations like Barcelona, Paris, Rome, and the Canary Islands have considerably lower tourist taxes.

Amsterdam ranks high globally for tourist taxes, falling within the top ten, just behind Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Montreal. While Amsterdam has a high percentage, some other cities in the top ten have higher accommodation prices. Honolulu, Hawaii, currently holds sixth place with a 10 percent tax rate, but a planned increase to 12 percent in 2027 will result in tourists paying more tax.
