Amsterdam city councillors have approved a plan to help new arrivals integrate into the city. The motion, titled “Make Amsterdam Your Home,” seeks to foster a sense of belonging for newcomers.
The initiative requires city officials to collaborate with international employers and community groups to develop a comprehensive program. This program aims to support new residents in settling into Amsterdam.
The plan includes several key components designed to ease the transition process. Language and city history lessons will be offered, providing newcomers with essential knowledge. An overview of local clubs, societies, and volunteer organizations will also be provided, connecting new residents with the city’s social fabric. Organized meetings between newcomers and long-term residents are also planned to foster connections and build community.
Lian Heinhuis, leader of the local PvdA party, spearheaded the plan. She emphasized the importance of integrating all newcomers, regardless of their background. She highlighted the disparity between requirements for refugees and the lack of expectations for expats, particularly regarding the 30% tax cut offered to the latter.
The proposal also urges city officials to engage with companies on addressing the city’s housing shortage. It references ASML’s funding of social housing in the Eindhoven region as a positive example.
The proposal specifically mentions companies like Booking.com and Adyen. It suggests these companies could contribute to solving the housing crisis and demonstrate social responsibility by investing in similar initiatives.
Heinhuis stated that companies pay very little tax in the Netherlands. She added that in return, they should invest in the city’s livability and the well-being of their employees and neighbors.
