Two teenagers are dead and three others seriously injured after a car crash in a ditch in Flevoland, Netherlands. The single-vehicle accident occurred around 1:30 AM on Sunday on the Noordermeerweg, between Rutten and Lemmer.
The victims, all between 18 and 19 years old, were from the nearby village of Urk. Initial reports indicate the white Volkswagen Golf left the road on a slight bend.
Emergency services, including police, ambulances, and fire crews from both Flevoland and Friesland, responded to the scene, located on the border of the two provinces. The vehicle’s debris was scattered across approximately 20 meters, indicating the car went straight off the road instead of navigating the curve.
Urk’s mayor, Bart Jaspers Feijer, expressed his condolences, stating the community deeply felt the pain of the accident. He acknowledged the profound grief and helplessness experienced by many due to the sudden loss of young lives.
Police are currently investigating the cause of the crash. They are seeking information from witnesses or anyone who may have seen the car traveling from Urk towards Lemmer prior to the accident. Local media have reported that the two deceased young men were cousins.
