Protest Against Violence in Gaza Held in The Hague

Tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered in The Hague and on Terschelling on Sunday to protest against the violence and humanitarian blockade in the Gaza Strip.

The demonstration in The Hague, a joint action by over ninety aid organizations, saw activists dressed in red forming a ‘red line’ to symbolize what they believe is a boundary being crossed by Israel. The protesters marched from the Malieveld to the Peace Palace, home of the International Court of Justice, before returning to their starting point.

Outgoing Prime Minister Dick Schoof acknowledged the demonstration on X, stating that the Netherlands remains committed to ending the violence and the humanitarian blockade of the Gaza Strip. This follows criticism of Schoof for not responding to a previous demonstration four weeks ago.

It is difficult to estimate the exact number of participants. The NS reported crowded trains to The Hague. A previous protest four weeks ago was estimated to have drawn 100,000 people.

On Terschelling, visitors to the Oerol open-air theater festival joined in solidarity, with several thousand people forming a red line on the Wadden Island. The festival organization had provided space for this form of protest following requests from visitors, theater makers, and island residents.
