Oxfam Novib Director Michiel Servaes Reflects on Activism and the Palestinian Cause

Michiel Servaes, the director of Oxfam Novib, is deeply involved in advocating for the Palestinian cause, a commitment that spans four decades. His recent efforts culminated in a large demonstration in The Hague, yet he remains focused on achieving tangible political change.

Servaes, reflecting on the recent demonstration in The Hague, acknowledged the immense turnout of approximately one hundred thousand people. Despite the heartwarming support, he expressed disappointment that the demonstration yielded no immediate concrete results in terms of influencing Dutch policy.

Servaes recalled a disillusioning conversation with Prime Minister Schoof, where Schoof stated he does not work with a red line regarding international law, despite previously stating it was a guiding principle.

Servaes’s dedication to activism dates back to his youth, inspired by his family history and a growing awareness of global issues. His path led him to diplomacy, but he found it restrictive and ultimately left due to disagreements with government policies.

He also recounted his experiences as a Member of Parliament, where he publicly challenged the cabinet’s stance on the 2014 Gaza conflict and advocated for the recognition of the Palestinian state.

Servaes emphasized the importance of continued action, including demonstrations, to advocate for the Palestinian cause. He announced plans for a second Red Line demonstration on June 15, urging the government to take decisive action, including potential sanctions.

He highlighted the role of media in shaping public opinion and urged for more awareness and courage in taking a principled position on the issue.

In February, Servaes visited Gaza to witness the situation firsthand and support his colleagues. He spoke of the dire conditions, the loss of homes, and the psychological toll on the local population.

Servaes acknowledged the complexities of conveying his message effectively, recognizing that his background may grant him an easier platform compared to others. He also addressed criticism from within the activist community and stressed the importance of learning from different perspectives.
