Van Vroonhoven withdraws candidacy for NSC party leadership

Sylvia van Vroonhoven has withdrawn her candidacy for party leadership of the New Social Contract (NSC) party, citing her inability to fully commit to the role and her disillusionment with the current political climate. The deadline for applications for the party leadership position closed at midnight.

Van Vroonhoven, who stepped in as parliamentary leader after Omtzigt’s departure, stated that her primary objective was to refocus NSC on its foundational principles. However, the upcoming elections require a level of commitment that she feels unable to provide at this time.

She also expressed concern about the current style of politics, advocating for greater mutual respect and understanding among individuals. Her sentiments echo previous complaints regarding the behavior within the governing coalition following the collapse of the Schoof cabinet.

This decision ensures that NSC will present a completely new face in the upcoming elections. Van Vroonhoven, previously second on the list after Omtzigt, played a crucial role in establishing NSC alongside him, drawing on their shared history within the CDA.

Currently, the identities of other applicants remain undisclosed, with the exception of Diederik Boomsma, a Member of Parliament and former CDA leader in Amsterdam’s city council. Boomsma has publicly declared his candidacy and advocates for a ‘socially conservative’ platform, emphasizing the restoration of authority, respect for culture, reduced migration, and a supportive government.

Van Vroonhoven affirmed her intention to continue her work in the House of Representatives for the foreseeable future.
