Dutch Railways Reduce First-Class Seating to Address Low Occupancy

The Dutch national railway company (NS) is reducing the number of first-class seats on 190 of its sprinter trains due to low usage during peak hours. The move aims to address overcrowding in second-class compartments and alleviate resentment among passengers.

The decision, however, has sparked some criticism, with concerns raised about disadvantaging first-class ticket holders and potentially driving wealthier individuals to use cars more frequently.

Historically, the elite abandoned train travel long ago, even with the introduction of first-class compartments. They found the experience restrictive and preferred the freedom and self-determination offered by automobiles.

The modern congestion experienced by car travelers offers a stark contrast to the experience of train passengers. Those in standard class may soon find themselves enjoying the former first class compartments, while those who choose the car are left behind.
