Olaf Sleijpen Appointed President of the Dutch Central Bank

Olaf Sleijpen, 54, has been appointed as the new president of De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), the Dutch central bank. He succeeds Klaas Knot, who will step down on July 1st. The appointment comes at a time of significant geopolitical uncertainty, placing Sleijpen at the forefront of maintaining stability within the European monetary system.

Sleijpen’s primary challenge will be navigating complex issues such as interest rate management, the introduction of euro bonds, and ensuring sufficient financial buffers for banks, countries, and citizens. These matters often involve politically sensitive decisions that can create friction between the central bank and the government. The selection process itself was reportedly tense, with the final decision being delayed until the last possible moment.

Sleijpen was considered a logical choice for the position. Other potential candidates mentioned in the media included Laura van Geest (AFM), Jeroen Dijsselbloem (former minister), and Sandra Phlippen (ABN AMRO economist). Some favored Gita Salden due to the ECB president’s desire for more female leaders. However, Sleijpen’s deep understanding of DNB’s operations and his approachable leadership style ultimately made him a popular choice within the bank.

Sleijpen’s career has been largely centered around DNB, beginning immediately after his graduation. He was mentored by Nout Wellink, a former president of DNB. He also served as an advisor to Wim Duisenberg at the European Central Bank and held positions at pension fund ABP and the University of Maastricht. He returned to DNB in 2011 and joined the board in 2020.

Sleijpen is known for his advocacy for the LGBTQI community and his membership in the VVD political party. While he was once actively involved in the party, he has distanced himself since joining the board of DNB to ensure his independence.

Some within DNB believe Sleijpen can be somewhat political. However, writer Arnon Grunberg, who shadowed Sleijpen, found him to be intelligent and somewhat detached, even envisioning him as a character in a novel.

Olaf Sleijpen’s Curriculum Vitae:

  • 2025: President of De Nederlandsche Bank
  • 2011-2024: Various management positions at DNB, since 2024 Director of Monetary Affairs
  • 2008-2011: Responsible for institutional clients at pension provider APG

  • 2001-2004: Assistant to President Wim Duisenberg at the European Central Bank
