Labor Party and GreenLeft Members Approve Historic Merger

Members of the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA) and GreenLeft (GroenLinks) have overwhelmingly voted in favor of merging into a new left-wing party. The decision, announced in a packed room at café Dudok, marks a historic moment in Dutch politics, with 88% of PvdA members and 89% of GroenLinks members supporting the merger.

The merger aims to consolidate left-wing forces in a political landscape that has been dominated by right-wing parties for decades. Leaders from both parties expressed enthusiasm for the outcome, emphasizing the strong support from their members.

The merger process, which began as an assessment of potential collaboration, has been years in the making. Both parties recognize the need for unity to effectively compete for power and achieve their shared goals of a more social Netherlands.

Over the years, numerous attempts to forge electoral pacts and closer cooperation among left-wing parties have fallen short. However, this time, the conditions were right, with PvdA and GroenLinks being of similar size, both in opposition, and sharing a similar number of members. This equal footing facilitated a merger process free from hostile takeover concerns.

The two parties have moved closer in recent years, culminating in a joint list, leader, and election program in the 2023 parliamentary elections. This cooperation resonated with supporters, paving the way for the formal merger decision.

A founding congress is planned for the spring of 2026, where the new party name will be chosen, organizational matters will be resolved, and the ideological foundations will be solidified. While PvdA and GroenLinks share common ground, their basic principles will be closely examined. The party leader will also be selected at the congress.

The commitment of action groups and younger generations within the parties has been crucial to the merger’s success. These younger members are driven by idealism and a desire for practical solutions, rather than strict adherence to ideological labels.

Currently, PvdA and GroenLinks will maintain their separate identities until the merger is formally completed.
