A 30-year-old Ukrainian army deserter, Roman D, is accused of stabbing five people in central Amsterdam in March. He reportedly desired to be incarcerated in a European prison, according to the current affairs program Nieuwsuur.
Roman D allegedly received permission from his military superiors to visit his mother but instead traveled to the Netherlands. His motive, according to colleagues, was to commit a crime that would land him in a European jail, where he believed he would be well-cared for.
Colleagues indicated that Roman D had a history of mental health issues. His behavior reportedly became increasingly unstable after suffering a severe concussion, which led to him being assigned to desk duty.
Following his arrest, Dutch police faced difficulties confirming his identity as he carried false identification documents bearing the names of five fellow soldiers.
Initial speculation suggested that Roman D, originally from Russian-controlled Donetsk, might have been involved in a Russian operation. However, his acquaintances dismissed this notion, stating that he had fought against the Russians for years, making collaboration unlikely.
The Dutch public prosecution office stated that they are considering all possible scenarios.
Roman D faces charges of attempted murder or manslaughter with terrorist intent. His first court appearance is scheduled for early July.
Nieuwsuur’s report included interviews with Roman D’s mother and eight of his army colleagues.
