Netherlands Celebrates Decisive Victory Over Malta, Depay Equals Van Persie’s Goal Record

The Netherlands secured a resounding 6-0 victory against Malta in their recent match, marking a successful end to the season for many international players. Memphis Depay shone, scoring twice within the first fifteen minutes, bringing his international goal tally to 50, matching Robin van Persie’s record.

The match, held in Groningen, was a celebration for captain Virgil van Dijk, who scored and expressed his joy at returning to the city where his career began. The Euroborg stadium was sold out, creating a vibrant atmosphere as the crowd supported the national team.

Despite an early 3-0 lead that somewhat slowed the game’s pace, the Netherlands continued to dominate. In a strong final phase, Xavi Simons, Donyell Malen (scoring twice), Noa Lang, and Micky van de Ven all added to the scoreline.

Coach Ronald Koeman, who made four changes to the starting lineup, emphasized the importance of winning the qualifying series for the World Cup. Koeman highlighted Depay’s importance to the team, citing his combination play, technical skills, and overall contribution.

The team will continue their qualifying journey in September with matches against Poland and Lithuania. While most players now head on vacation, a few will participate in the Club World Cup.
