Eurostar Announces New Routes to Geneva and Frankfurt by 2031

Eurostar plans to expand its network with new routes to Geneva and Frankfurt, with operations expected to begin as early as 2031. The announcement includes a daily train service between Amsterdam, Brussels, and Geneva, with an estimated journey time of 6 hours and 20 minutes.

The company also aims to establish a new connection from London to both Frankfurt and Geneva.

The addition of these three new lines represents a significant expansion for Eurostar.

The new route would benefit the Netherlands, which lost its daily connection with Switzerland last year when NS and Deutsche Bahn discontinued the train journey to Basel.

Eurostar aims to transport thirty million passengers by 2030.

The actual commencement of the new connections in 2031 is contingent on the delivery of new trains.

Eurostar currently has 51 trains and intends to acquire up to fifty more, increasing its fleet to 67 trains. Negotiations with manufacturers have been ongoing since last year, but an order has not yet been placed. New connections can only be introduced after the delivery of the new equipment.

Passenger numbers are increasing annually, with 19.5 million passengers transported last year, an increase of 850,000 compared to the previous year.

Despite the rise in passenger numbers, turnover remained at approximately 2 billion euros.

Profit decreased from 196 million euros in 2023 to 155 million euros in 2024 due to increased spending on salaries and other costs.

While Eurostar is the largest pan-European rail operator, other companies are also seeking to enter the market.

Flix, the parent company of Flixbus, announced plans to invest one billion euros in high-speed trains for use within Germany and neighboring countries.

Other potential competitors, such as the Dutch discounter GoVolta, are facing challenges in securing investors.
