Dutch Parliament Requests Outgoing Cabinet to Elaborate on Wilders’ Asylum Plans

Geert Wilders’ PVV will vote against a motion to elaborate on his ten-point asylum plan, as he prefers immediate implementation rather than further discussion. The motion, proposed by Thierry Baudet of Forum for Democracy, sought to have the outgoing cabinet develop concrete proposals based on Wilders’ plan.

Wilders believes further elaboration would only lead to delays and inaction. He intends to include the ten-point plan in its entirety in the PVV election program, making it a central theme of his campaign.

The downfall of the Schoof cabinet was attributed to Wilders’ frustration with perceived “dithering” and disagreements with other coalition members, particularly Nicolien van Vroonhoven of NSC, regarding the rule of law. Wilders aims to capitalize on the asylum and migration issue, a topic he has successfully used to gain voter support in the past.

Despite recognizing legal and practical challenges in Wilders’ plan, Dilan Yesilgöz (VVD), Nicolien van Vroonhoven (NSC), and Caroline van der Plas (BBB) did not want to be perceived as obstructing a stricter asylum policy. Other party leaders now face the challenge of shifting the focus of the national conversation away from asylum and migration.

Baudet pointed out the difficulty of closing borders without renouncing the UN Refugee Convention, highlighting a potential obstacle to Wilders’ plan. Wilders’ opponents acknowledge his formidable reputation and influence on the asylum and migration debate.
