Amsterdam residents are invited to share their opinions on the proposed location of a new sex center on Europaboulevard in Amsterdam-Zuid. The multi-story brothel, backed by the council and featuring 100 rooms for sex workers, aims to reduce criminal influence on prostitution and alleviate tourist pressure on the city center’s Red Light District.
The location for the sex center, which will also include “culture, education, and erotica,” is on wasteland near the A10 motorway. The council stated that this location was chosen after extensive consultation.
Opinions and objections can be filed between June 12 and July 23. Information meetings for locals will be held on June 25 and 28.
Following the consultation, all feedback will be evaluated to determine if changes to the plan are necessary. Mayor Femke Halsema noted that the Europaboulevard was deemed the best location with the fewest drawbacks, citing its strong, socially resilient neighborhood.
However, entrepreneurs, sports clubs, and schools have expressed concerns about upheaval and safety. The European Medicines Agency and the RAI conference center have also voiced protests.
Officials in The Hague are also concerned about the international reaction to building the center near the Zuidas business district. They also question the cost and responsibility for additional funding related to the Zuidasdok project.
