GroenLinks and PvdA will campaign together in upcoming elections, but remain separate parties. The decision was announced by the party boards on Thursday.
Members of both parties will vote in an online referendum to determine whether the current form of cooperation will continue. The referendum, running from Thursday until June 12th, will also address the proposed merger of the two parties into one.
The vote will determine if GroenLinks and PvdA will proceed with dissolving and establishing a new left-wing party before the planned congress on June 21st.
While the elections, expected in late October, are approaching quickly, a founding congress will still be held. At this congress, members will decide on the organizational structure and ideology of the potential new party.
This congress was originally planned after the municipal elections in March 2026 to avoid complications for local factions. Bringing the founding congress forward was not considered after the recent cabinet collapse.
