Radio Personality Peter de Bie Dies at 75

Peter de Bie, a prominent figure in Dutch radio broadcasting, has died at the age of 75. He passed away on his birthday after suffering from a long-term illness and choosing euthanasia.

De Bie’s death comes shortly after the passing of his wife, Dieuwertje Blok, earlier in March. He described his physical condition as deteriorating in an interview with de Volkskrant prior to his death.

His career began in 1972 at Rono, the broadcaster for the northern provinces, after studying labor and organizational psychology in Groningen. He quickly found himself reporting on significant events, such as a demonstration against the war in Vietnam.

De Bie gained recognition for his work on programs like Voer voor vogels (KRO), Popdonder plus (Vara) and Stand van zaken (Vara), where he developed a reputation for his sharp wit and insightful commentary. In 1985, he received the Zilveren Reissmicrofoon, a prestigious award for radio professionals. He later ventured into television, contributing to programs such as Tros Aktua and Radar.

He co-hosted Nieuwsweekend, formerly the Tros Nieuwsshow, a popular program on NPO Radio 1, for three decades.

De Bie was known for his strong opinions and willingness to challenge authority, leading to conflicts with several employers throughout his career. In 2018, he moved the Nieuwsshow to Max after a disagreement with Avrotros, reflecting his dedication to the program.
