Dutch Citizens Express Disappointment After Fall of Government

The collapse of the Dutch government, a coalition of PVV, VVD, NSC, and BBB, has sparked a wave of disappointment and frustration among voters across the Netherlands, with many expressing regret over their choices in the previous election. The dissatisfaction stems from unfulfilled promises and perceived failures in addressing key issues such as healthcare, education, and the cost of living.

In Gouda, Ben Matthijs, a former PVV supporter, voiced his disillusionment with Geert Wilders, citing the lack of progress in healthcare as a major concern. He specifically lamented the staff shortages in the sector and the failure to appoint Fleur Agema as Minister of Public Health. Matthijs plans to return to the CDA in the next election, drawn to Henri Bontenbal’s clear communication.

Gerard, a retired truck driver, echoed the sentiment, criticizing the coalition’s performance and predicting a decline in support for Wilders. He referenced Wilders’ past departures from coalitions and subsequent electoral losses. Gerard also pointed to Marjolein Faber’s perceived ineffectiveness.

Marloes Kraaijeveld, a kindergarten teacher, expressed concern over significant cuts in education, particularly the reduction in funding for the educational opportunities scheme, which supports children with limited Dutch language skills or parents with low education levels. Kraaijeveld sees the cabinet’s fall as an opportunity, but acknowledges the uncertainty surrounding future elections.

In Nieuwegein, Balby Zimmerman, a clothing store owner who voted for the PVV, voiced concerns about asylum policy and Wilders’ unwavering support for Israel. Despite these concerns, she intends to vote for him again, but believes the four coalition parties never truly worked together.

Bep van der Mark, Zimmerman’s colleague, highlighted the housing shortage and rising cost of living as factors that contributed to the PVV’s success in the 2023 elections. She expressed disappointment that the cabinet failed to deliver on its promises, such as building more homes and providing financial relief.
