Peter de Bie, a prominent figure in Dutch radio, has passed away on his 75th birthday after battling a serious illness. He chose euthanasia. His death comes shortly after the passing of his wife, Dieuwertje Blok, in early March.
De Bie, known for his sharp wit and unwavering principles, had a long and influential career in radio. He is remembered as a headstrong radio maker with an excellent reputation.
His career began unexpectedly after he studied labor and organizational psychology in Groningen. He took a job at Rono, the broadcaster for the northern provinces, in 1972. He then joined KRO’s radio program Voer voor vogels and moved to Hilversum.
De Bie built his reputation with programs such as Vara’s Popdonder plus and Stand van zaken. In 1985, he received the prestigious Zilveren Reissmicrofoon. He later ventured into television, working on reports, editing, and documentaries for Tros.
He was a co-presenter of Nieuwsweekend with Mieke van der Weij for three decades.
Despite his success, De Bie often clashed with his employers due to his strong convictions. He was known for speaking his mind and standing up for what he believed in. In 2018, he moved Nieuwsshow to Max after a disagreement with Avrotros.
