Dutch Cabinet Meeting Addresses Government Collapse Following Right-Wing Coalition Withdrawal

The Dutch cabinet is holding an emergency meeting to address the fallout from the collapse of the right-wing coalition government. This development follows Geert Wilders’ withdrawal of his PVV party from the coalition due to disagreements over asylum policies.

Prime Minister Dick Schoof, whose cabinet oversaw one of the shortest terms in Dutch parliamentary history, is scheduled to meet with the King to submit his resignation. He will also address the parliament on Wednesday morning to discuss the unfolding situation.

Wilders has announced the immediate withdrawal of all PVV ministers from the cabinet. However, there is speculation that some ministers, including Ingrid Coenradie and Dirk Beljaarts, may choose to remain in their positions. Trade minister Reinette Klever and health minister Fleur Agema have already confirmed their departure. The PVV holds five ministerial and four junior ministerial positions.

In the wake of the government’s collapse, the cabinet transitions into a “caretaker” role until new elections are held and a new government is formed. Elections are not anticipated to take place before the end of September at the earliest.

Ministers expressed anger and disappointment at Wilders’ decision as they arrived for the cabinet meeting. Home affairs minister Judith Uitermark voiced concerns about the “chaos being created,” while housing minister Mona Keijzer accused Wilders of betraying the Netherlands by prioritizing himself over the country.

Opposition MPs are calling for immediate general elections. GroenLinks-PvdA leader Frans Timmermans welcomed the cabinet’s collapse, arguing that it provides an opportunity to address the country’s problems and work together again.
