The Dutch coalition government faces heightened tension as Geert Wilders, leader of the PVV, threatens to withdraw support due to disagreements over asylum policies.
Wilders met with Dilan Yesilgöz (VVD), Nicolien van Vroonhoven (NSC), and Caroline van der Plas (BBB) on Monday to discuss his proposed asylum measures. Wilders expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome of the meeting and continues to suggest he may leave the coalition.
Wilders is advocating for stricter border controls, the immediate return of asylum seekers at the borders, and a halt to the construction of new asylum seeker centers. He also proposes that individuals granted asylum status be removed from asylum seeker centers within fourteen weeks.
Initially, the coalition partners responded with restraint, noting that the PVV, through Minister Marjolein Faber, holds the Minister for Asylum and Migration portfolio and can propose relevant policies. Prior to the meeting on Monday, they emphasized that the responsibility for action lies with Wilders and Faber.
