New Book Examines Wealth Limits and Inequality in the Netherlands

Political philosopher Dick Timmer introduces the “min-for-max principle” in his new book, Some People Are Too Rich, advocating for a wealth limit and redistribution of assets to prioritize those at or below the subsistence minimum. Timmer, a limitarist, argues that individuals can be “too rich” when others have unmet needs, proposing that wealth above a certain threshold (possibly 10 million euros) should be redistributed to fund public services like healthcare and education.

Timmer contends that inequality extends beyond mere economics, encompassing social, personal, and cultural capital. He emphasizes the need to dismantle hierarchies and address the unequal distribution of opportunities and quality of life, noting the growing divide between the rich and poor in the Netherlands.

According to Timmer, addressing inequality requires distributing capital, dismantling hierarchies, and challenging the notion that inequality is simply inevitable. He criticizes the current tax system for favoring the wealthy and highlights the increasing political influence of the rich, cautioning against the erosion of democratic institutions.
