Negotiations between Dutch coalition parties regarding proposed asylum measures have stalled, with Geert Wilders expressing dissatisfaction after a meeting with Dilan Yesilgöz, Nicolien van Vroonhoven, and Caroline van der Plas.
Wilders, leader of the PVV party, is demanding stricter border controls, the immediate return of asylum seekers at the border, and a halt to the construction of new asylum centers. He also wants to limit the time that status holders (those who have been granted asylum) can stay in asylum seeker centers to fourteen weeks.
Other coalition partners initially reacted by stating that the PVV, with Minister Marjolein Faber in charge of Asylum and Migration, should be the one to propose specific measures. Van Vroonhoven reiterated this point after the meeting, emphasizing that Wilders has the opportunity to present his proposals to his minister for further development.
However, Wilders expressed disappointment with the response, stating that the meeting was not pleasant and that it did not appear the other parties were willing to agree to his demands. He wants concrete guarantees, not just openness to considering his proposals.
Further discussions are scheduled for Tuesday, where Wilders will reiterate his demands. He expressed pessimism about the outcome, stating that “it doesn’t look good.”
