Keti Koti Celebrations Commemorate Abolition of Slavery in the Netherlands

The Netherlands is commemorating Keti Koti, which translates to “broken chains” in Surinamese, marking the 1863 abolition of slavery. Celebrations are taking place across the country, including a series of events in Groningen throughout the weekend.

A free event organized by Stichting Kwaku Groningen is being held on July 1st at the Grote Markt to commemorate the abolition of slavery. The event, which runs from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM, features music, food, and storytelling.

Rapper Winne will headline the evening performance. Attendees can also enjoy food stalls, art exhibitions, and a Tori Tafra stage where speakers and storytellers will discuss the history of slavery in Dutch. The organization aims to raise historical awareness and promote inclusion and connection within the Netherlands through this event.

On Saturday, July 5th, the Keti Koti Festival will take place at the Akerk. The daytime program, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM, will feature live music and a food market. The evening program will include performances by various DJs and bands. Admission to the daytime program is free, but tickets are required for the evening program.
