Dutch Integration Exam to Focus More on Practical Knowledge

The Dutch integration exam will undergo significant changes starting July 1, shifting its focus from socially desirable behavior to more practical knowledge of Dutch society. Officials aim to foster greater self-reliance among newcomers and reduce reliance on stereotypes.

The current exam, implemented in 2013, has faced criticism for being denigrating and perpetuating stereotypes. Questions on topics like birthday customs or neighbor disputes often lacked clear-cut “correct” answers, even for Dutch citizens.

Integration expert Han Entzinger, who spearheaded the content review, emphasized the prioritization of knowledge in the revised exam. Candidates will need to correctly answer 28 out of 40 questions covering areas such as geography, history, social security benefits, and divorce registration.

Approximately 100,000 individuals are currently involved in the integration system, according to reports. While EU nationals and highly-skilled workers are exempt, the tests remain mandatory for refugees and most individuals seeking Dutch nationality.

The integration process requires newcomers to achieve a basic level of Dutch proficiency within three years, attend courses on job applications and the labor market, and sign a declaration affirming their respect for Dutch norms and values. Despite political discussions often portraying integration as a universal solution, Entzinger views it as a stepping stone towards basic participation in Dutch society, fulfilling the essential needs of most newcomers.
