Podcast Series Reveals Abuse of Power at Dutch Muslim Broadcasting Organization

A new podcast series titled “Onaantastbaar” (Untouchable) explores the rise and fall of the Dutch Muslim Broadcasting Organization (NMO) and the alleged abuse of power by its director, Frank William. The podcast, produced by NTR and NPO Radio 1, delves into the culture of fear and alleged misconduct that occurred at the NMO between 1993 and 2010.

The series, comprising eight episodes, is the result of three years of investigation, including interviews with over 150 people and the discovery of numerous confidential reports. The podcast aims to understand how William, despite accusations of sexual intimidation, threats of physical violence, and misuse of broadcasting funds, remained in his position for so long.

The makers of the podcast, Jair Stein, Jan Maarten Deurvorst, and Huda Rais, faced challenges in gaining the trust of those involved, many of whom were initially reluctant to cooperate. The team emphasized the importance of carefully presenting the relevance of the story and considering the potential impact on victims, especially those who had experienced sexual harassment.

The NMO, under William’s leadership, provided a platform for diverse voices, including critics of Islam like Theo van Gogh and Ayaan Hirsi Ali. However, behind the scenes, a different picture emerged, with sources describing a culture of fear and allegations of abuse of power.

William was eventually forced to leave in 2007 and was arrested in 2009 on suspicion of misuse of broadcasting funds. The NMO declared bankruptcy a year later. The podcast seeks to examine whether William’s position as a progressive Muslim who promoted integration shielded him from accountability. The ninth episode of the series will remain open, as the makers are still hoping to interview William and get his perspective on the events that transpired at the NMO.
