Van Tilburg Mode & Sport: Success of a Dutch Family Fashion Department Store

Van Tilburg Mode & Sport, the largest fashion department store in the Netherlands, continues to thrive despite the struggles faced by other clothing retailers. Located in Nistelrode, Noord-Brabant, the family business expects to generate a turnover of 100 million euros and welcome 750,000 customers this year.

The store is known for its exceptional service, including free parking, complimentary coffee, and a high employee-to-customer ratio. Customers can even have a personal shopper assist them throughout the store and have clothing tailored in the on-site workshop.

Founded in 1950 by Jan and Bets van Tilburg, the store has remained a family affair. Current directors, brothers Paul and Matthijs van Tilburg, took over the business a year and a half ago, continuing the tradition of gradual expansion and risk aversion established by their parents. The store occupies five buildings, boasting 15,000 square meters of clothing and shoes.

Experts in the retail sector consider Van Tilburg Mode & Sport an example of how to succeed. The store has cultivated a loyal customer base by focusing on convenience and personal attention. The company employs 590 people and has a turnover of 95 million euros in 2024.

The store maintains a unique garment transportation system, conceived by the founder, that efficiently moves clothing to the in-house sewing workshop. This allows for personalized alterations and contributes to the store’s boutique-like service.
