The Hague is bracing for a week of demonstrations and significant traffic disruptions as world leaders gather for the NATO summit. Authorities are preparing for a variety of protests, ranging from peace rallies to demonstrations against specific political figures and policies.
Traffic congestion is expected to triple on highways and local roads in and around The Hague, Wassenaar, Katwijk, Noordwijk, and Leiden due to road closures and blockades implemented for the safe transport of delegations. Rijkswaterstaat warns that the worst disruptions will likely occur on Monday afternoon/evening, Tuesday (all day), and Wednesday (morning to late evening).
Several groups are planning demonstrations throughout the summit. A ‘Peace Demonstration’ is scheduled, featuring speakers from various political backgrounds. LGBT activists will stage a protest called “Noise for Love,” targeting leaders with anti-LGBTQ+ stances. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators will gather for a “die-in” on ‘Gaza Beach’, protesting the Dutch Gaza policy. Extinction Rebellion plans to block the A12 highway to protest fossil fuel subsidies and other issues.
The municipality of The Hague emphasizes its commitment to facilitating peaceful protests, citing its status as a city of peace and justice. Two designated spots near the World Forum have been allocated for demonstrations, each accommodating up to one hundred people.
Alternative events are also planned. The ‘counter-summit coalition’ is holding an alternative summit, culminating in a gathering at the Koekamp park. The SP party is organizing a separate alternative summit featuring politicians from various European parties.
To maintain order during the summit, 27,000 officers will be deployed.
