Protests are anticipated in The Hague during the NATO summit, with various groups planning demonstrations on issues ranging from peace and justice to LGBTQ+ rights and the Palestinian cause. The summit, held on the hermetically sealed grounds around the World Forum, will be met by a limited number of demonstrators in designated areas.
Several organizations are mobilizing to voice their concerns, including the Nieuwe Vredesbeweging (New Peace Movement) and the SP political party, which are holding alternative summits. The SP’s summit at the Theater aan het Spui is already at full capacity.
The municipality of The Hague emphasizes its commitment to facilitating peaceful demonstrations, acknowledging the city’s role as a center for peace and justice. They aim to allow people to express their views without interference, regardless of the opinions of world leaders.
Specific demonstrations include an LGBTQ+ protest called “Noise for Love” at the International Homomonument, targeting leaders like Trump and Orbán, and a pro-Palestinian “die-in” at ‘Gaza Beach’. Additionally, Extinction Rebellion plans to occupy the A12 highway to protest various issues, including the situation in Gaza and fossil fuel subsidies.
Authorities anticipate significant traffic disruptions in the Randstad region from Sunday, June 22nd, to Thursday, June 26th, due to the summit. Closures and barriers are expected on major highways and local roads in and around The Hague, Wassenaar, Katwijk, Noordwijk, and Leiden.
