Protests are planned in The Hague during the NATO summit, addressing various issues including peace, LGBTQ+ rights, and the situation in Gaza. While previous NATO summits attracted large crowds, stricter limitations and security measures are in place this time.
Several groups are organizing demonstrations throughout the week. The ‘counter-summit coalition’ will hold an alternative summit and protest in the Koekamp park. The SP is hosting an alternative summit featuring politicians from European parties. Other demonstrations include a ‘Peace Manifestation’ with speakers from various movements.
The municipality of The Hague aims to facilitate protests, but restrictions apply. Only two locations near the World Forum are available for around one hundred demonstrators. Despite dozens of applications, world leaders are unlikely to be significantly impacted by the protests due to the summit’s security.
Various groups will voice their concerns during the summit. LGBT interest group COC will protest against hate speech, while pro-Palestinian demonstrators will gather at ‘Gaza Beach’ to protest Dutch Gaza policy. Extinction Rebellion plans to occupy the A12 highway to protest fossil fuel subsidies and other issues.
Significant traffic disruptions are expected in the Randstad region. Road closures and barriers will be in place to ensure the safe transport of delegations. The greatest disruptions are anticipated on Monday afternoon/evening, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
