The Hague Implements Extensive Security Measures for Upcoming NATO Summit

Around 9,000 people, including 45 heads of state and government, are expected to attend the summit, which will last only 2.5 hours on Wednesday. Former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, now NATO’s secretary general, advocated for The Hague to host the event.

A massive security operation, codenamed Orange Shield, is in effect, with five kilometres of fencing surrounding the World Forum convention centre. Deliveries are restricted, local schools are closed, and even the Noordwijk Ferris wheel is considered a potential threat.

Nearly half of the national police force, approximately 27,000 officers, will be on duty during the two-day event. Frigates will patrol the North Sea, while fighter jets and helicopters will provide aerial surveillance. Military police will escort diplomats to the facility.

The Johan de Wittlaan, a major thoroughfare, has been closed since April to construct temporary offices for delegates. Trees, street lights, and traffic lights have been removed, causing significant disruptions.

Schiphol airport has experienced cancellations and delays for approximately 100,000 air travellers due to reduced slot availability and runway closures. The ANWB motoring organization has warned of major traffic delays around The Hague due to motorway closures and restricted access.

US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are expected to attend the summit. Trump’s visit is anticipated to involve approximately 1,000 American staff, including security personnel and advisors.
