Zelenskyy Visits Denmark Amidst Challenges to European Dream and US Aid Uncertainty

Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent visit to Denmark highlighted the intertwined nature of Ukraine’s defense and European security, even as significant challenges loom for both. Denmark, assuming the EU presidency, aims to bolster Ukraine’s path to EU membership, but faces obstacles such as Hungary’s opposition and uncertainty surrounding continued US military aid.

The suspension of US military assistance, particularly air defense missiles crucial for countering intensifying Russian attacks, presents a critical challenge. The potential gap in support necessitates Europe stepping up its commitment to Ukraine’s defense.

Despite these hurdles, Denmark is pursuing a “Plan B” to informally advance Ukraine’s EU membership negotiations, focusing on readiness for when an agreement can be reached. However, Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban remains a staunch opponent to Ukraine’s membership, citing the ongoing war as an “imminent threat.”

Ukraine is actively seeking to strengthen its own defense capabilities through joint production agreements, including a deal with an American drone company to produce “hundreds of thousands” of air defense drones. Zelenskyy also hinted at potential agreements with Danish or European companies for air defense systems and missiles.

While acknowledging Denmark’s support for its defense industry, Zelenskyy emphasized the need for continued American aid, particularly for the Patriot air defense system capable of intercepting Russian ballistic missiles. He expressed hope for resumed US support and a forthcoming conversation with Donald Trump.
