Young Women Increasingly Joining Sports Associations

A recent study by the Sports Analysis Institute (IDAN) reveals a growing trend of young women, aged 16 to 29, participating in sports associations. The study, released on Saturday, highlights a significant increase in association membership among this demographic between 2016 and 2024.

The most notable increase is observed in the 25-29 age group, where membership has surged from 28 percent to 36 percent. This indicates a growing interest in sports and community engagement among women in their late twenties.

The 20-24 age group also shows a considerable increase, with membership rising from 33 percent to 40 percent. This suggests that sports associations are effectively attracting and retaining young women in their early twenties.

For the youngest age group, 16-19 year olds, the proportion of association members has increased from 47 percent to 50 percent. While the increase is less dramatic than in the older age groups, it still demonstrates a sustained interest in sports participation among teenage girls.

Frans Hammer, Vice Chairman of the Danish Sports Federation (DIF), expressed his satisfaction with this positive trend, especially considering the increasing prevalence of digitization. Hammer believes this development reflects the efforts of sports associations to prioritize exercise and community building over competition and results. He emphasized the importance of sports associations providing appealing opportunities for young women seeking both physical activity and social connections.
